About This Procedure

What is a Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens and repairs the vaginal canal and the muscles of the vaginal wall. It is most commonly sought after childbirth, where stretching of the vaginal tissues can cause reduced sensation, discomfort or a feeling of looseness. It may also be performed for reconstructive purposes. At Optimised Care, vaginoplasty is performed by consultant gynaecologists with experience in female pelvic reconstructive surgery. All consultations are conducted with complete confidentiality and sensitivity.

Common Question

Is it safe to have this procedure done privately?

Yes. At Optimised Care, vaginoplasty is performed by a fully qualified consultant gynaecologist in a regulated, CQC-registered hospital setting. Your safety and outcome are our priority. We will only recommend surgery when it is clinically appropriate for your individual circumstances and when you have had the opportunity to fully understand the procedure and alternatives.

Step by Step

What happens on the day?

01

Consultation and consent

Your consultant discusses your concerns, expectations and medical history. The anatomy and planned approach are explained. You have the opportunity to ask any questions before consenting.

02

The procedure

Performed under general anaesthetic, the procedure tightens the vaginal walls and supporting muscles using carefully placed sutures. The procedure takes 1-2 hours. Excess vaginal lining may also be removed if present.

03

Recovery and discharge

Most patients are discharged the same day or the following morning. You will receive wound care instructions, prescribed pain relief and a follow-up appointment.

Your Outcomes

Recovery after vaginoplasty

Recovery from vaginoplasty requires avoidance of intercourse, tampons and strenuous activity for 6-8 weeks. Swelling, discomfort and some discharge are normal in the early weeks. Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks and to full activities within 6-8 weeks.

Day 1-3

Rest at home. Ice packs to reduce swelling. Light walking.

1-2 weeks

Return to light desk work. Avoid strenuous activity.

4-6 weeks

Swelling and bruising resolve. Avoid intercourse, tampons and swimming.

6-8 weeks

Follow-up with consultant. Return to full activities as advised.

Vaginoplasty is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
