About This Procedure
What is a Septorhinoplasty?
Septorhinoplasty combines two procedures: a septoplasty (correction of a deviated nasal septum to improve breathing) and a rhinoplasty (reshaping of the external nose for cosmetic improvement). It is performed when a patient has both functional breathing difficulties and wishes to address the appearance of their nose at the same time. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. Changes are made from inside the nose where possible to avoid external scarring. Results become fully visible over several months as swelling resolves.
Common Question
How long before I see the final result?
Initial swelling resolves over 2-4 weeks and most of the cosmetic change is visible within 2-3 months. However, the final, settled result of a rhinoplasty takes up to 12 months to fully appear as subtle swelling gradually resolves. Your consultant will give you a realistic expectation of the timeline at consultation.

Step by Step
What happens on the day?
01
Admission
You are admitted having fasted. Your surgeon marks any planned changes and confirms the surgical plan. The procedure and what to expect in recovery are reviewed.
02
The procedure
Under general anaesthetic, the septum is straightened and any structural abnormalities corrected. The external nose is reshaped by modifying the bone and cartilage framework. Internal dissolving sutures are used. External splints or packing may be placed. The procedure takes 2-3 hours.
03
Recovery
An overnight stay is typically required. You will have a nasal splint for 1-2 weeks. Bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose are expected and normal. Full aftercare and follow-up instructions are provided.

Recovery after septorhinoplasty
Recovery from septorhinoplasty requires patience. The dramatic swelling and bruising of the first 1-2 weeks resolves significantly by week 3-4. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work at 2-3 weeks. The final cosmetic result takes up to 12 months to fully appear as residual swelling gradually resolves.
Day 1-7
Splint in place. Significant bruising and swelling. Rest at home.
1-2 weeks
Splint removed. Bruising fading. Most swelling resolved. Return to light work.
3-4 weeks
Return to normal activities. Avoid contact sports and strenuous exercise.
3-12 months
Residual swelling gradually resolves. Final result visible at 12 months.

Septorhinoplasty is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
