About This Procedure

What is a Joint Injections?

Joint injections deliver medication directly into a painful joint, providing targeted relief for inflammation and pain. The two main types are corticosteroid injections (a powerful anti-inflammatory) and hyaluronic acid injections (which lubricate the joint — sometimes called a viscosupplementation injection). Joint injections are commonly used to treat knee, hip, shoulder and other joints affected by osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendinitis or inflammatory conditions. The procedure is performed in the clinic or under image guidance and takes only a few minutes.

Common Question

Will the injection hurt?

Most patients describe the injection as brief sharp discomfort, similar to having a blood test. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin beforehand, making the procedure very well tolerated. The entire appointment typically takes less than 30 minutes.

CONSULTATION — Ultrasound-guided injection setup

Step by Step

What happens on the day?

01

Arrival and assessment

Your consultant reviews your symptoms and imaging to confirm the most appropriate injection and target joint.

02

The injection

The skin is cleaned and local anaesthetic applied. Using anatomical landmarks or ultrasound guidance, the needle is positioned precisely and the medication administered. The procedure takes 5-10 minutes.

03

After the injection

You are observed briefly before being discharged. You can leave the same day — most patients drive themselves home. You should avoid strenuous activity for 24-48 hours.

Your Outcomes

After your joint injection

There is minimal recovery time after a joint injection. You may experience a temporary increase in pain for 24-48 hours after the procedure (a steroid flare) — this is normal and settles. The full benefit of the injection typically takes 1-2 weeks to be felt and can last from several weeks to several months.

24-48 hours

Avoid strenuous activity. Some temporary soreness at injection site is normal.

1-2 weeks

Full benefit of the injection begins. Pain and inflammation reduce.

1-3 months

Peak benefit period. Engage with physiotherapy to maximise the effect.

As needed

Follow-up with consultant to assess response and discuss next steps.

Joint Injections is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
