About This Procedure

What is a Hip Replacement?

Hip replacement surgery removes damaged or worn surfaces of the hip joint and replaces them with an artificial implant. It is most commonly performed to treat severe osteoarthritis that has not responded to non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, pain medication or injections. At Optimised Care, hip replacement is performed by experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeons at The Bromsgrove Hospital. Robotic-assisted surgery is available, offering greater precision in implant positioning and the potential for faster recovery.

Common Question

Will I be in pain after surgery?

Pain management is a central part of your care. You will receive a tailored pain relief plan before, during and after your procedure. Most patients find that within a few days, post-operative discomfort is well controlled and significantly less than the chronic pain they experienced before surgery. Our team will support you throughout your recovery.

Step by Step

What happens on the day?

01

Admission and preparation

You will arrive at The Bromsgrove Hospital and be welcomed by our nursing team. Your anaesthetist will meet you to discuss the type of anaesthetic — most hip replacements are performed under spinal anaesthetic with sedation, meaning you are comfortable but not fully unconscious.

02

The procedure

The surgery takes approximately 60-90 minutes. Your surgeon removes the damaged femoral head and socket and replaces them with precision-fitted implant components. If robotic-assisted surgery is being used, the robotic arm guides the surgeon for optimal implant placement.

03

Recovery room

After surgery you will spend 1-2 hours in the recovery room where our nursing team monitors you as the anaesthetic wears off. You will have a drip and possibly a drain near the wound.

04

Ward and physiotherapy

Most patients are helped to stand and take their first steps with a physiotherapist on the same day as surgery. You will typically stay in hospital for 1-2 nights and leave with crutches and a clear recovery plan.

Your Outcomes

Recovery after hip replacement

Recovery from hip replacement takes time, but most patients are walking with crutches within days of surgery and making steady progress within weeks. Following your physiotherapy programme is the single most important thing you can do to achieve a good outcome.

Day 1-2

Standing and walking short distances with physiotherapist support. Discharge with crutches.

2-6 weeks

Gradual increase in walking distance. Most daily activities becoming possible. Crutches phased out.

6-12 weeks

Return to driving (check with surgeon). Low-impact exercise such as swimming and cycling.

3-6 months

Return to most normal activities. Full recovery and final assessment with your consultant.

Hip Replacement is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.

Your Questions

Your questions, answered.

The robotic-assisted hip replacement was recommended by my consultant and I'm glad I went with it. The precision was reassuring and my recovery has been textbook. Walking unaided at eight weeks.
