Mr Makrides is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, and serves as Executive Chairman of the group of directors at Optimised Care, Bromsgrove. With over 15 years of consultant experience, he is a recognised leader in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery, helping patients regain mobility with precision and confidence.

Training and qualifications

He graduated with merit from Leicester-Warwick Medical School in 2004 and completed his orthopaedic training on the Warwick Orthopaedic Training Programme. He went on to undertake advanced fellowship training at Oxford, a globally recognised centre for orthopaedic excellence. In 2013, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Leadership at Optimised Care

As Executive Chairman of the group of directors at Optimised Care, Mr Makrides leads the strategic direction of the hospital and its clinical teams. Under his chairmanship, Optimised Care has established itself as a destination for advanced hip and knee surgery, combining cutting-edge technology with the personal, attentive care of a specialist hospital.

This leadership role builds on seven years as Clinical Service Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, where he oversaw one of the UK's busiest orthopaedic departments. That experience — managing complex caseloads, driving service innovation, and mentoring the next generation of surgeons — directly shapes how Optimised Care operates today.

I am an experienced GP and pride myself in providing a high level of clinical care for my patients. I have general practice experience of over 20 years. Prior to this, I gained knowledge and experience working in different specialties including diabetes, dermatology, neurology, rheumatology, psychiatry, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology. As a GP, I also obtained postgraduate qualifications in primary care diabetes, cardiovascular health, women's health and sexual and reproductive healthcare. Having worked as a GP partner for over 17 years, I also enjoy the management of running a practice, looking at protocols and procedures, and being the CQC manager for my team. I also offer remote appointments if more convenient for my patients.

Mr Khaira qualified from Cambridge and Oxford Universities in 1988 and has practised as a Consultant Surgeon since 1999, with a subspecialist interest in general and vascular surgery. His clinical work spans the full range of arterial and venous surgery, alongside a high-volume hernia and general surgical practice.

Over the past seven years, Mr Khaira has performed more than 2,000 laparoscopic hernia repairs. He is actively involved in teaching surgical registrars and consultant colleagues and is a member of the British Hernia Society. His practice includes complex abdominal wall hernia repairs as well as routine cases.

For varicose veins, he offers a minimally invasive ambulatory approach using radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure) — allowing patients to return home the same day with significantly faster recovery than open surgical alternatives.

His wider clinical practice covers gallbladder surgery, carpal tunnel release, treatment of benign anal and bowel conditions, excision of skin lesions, and microsclerotherapy for thread veins.

Professor Mohammed Al Abadie is a highly respected Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at University of Wolverhampton. With over 30 years of service, he has held senior leadership roles across multiple NHS Trusts, including as Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Director at The Royal Wolverhampton and North Cumbria NHS Trust. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional expertise in clinical dermatology, strategic leadership, and medical education. Professor Al Abadie has been instrumental in advancing NHS dermatological services, pioneering several specialist initiatives such as vascular laser therapy, Skin Cancer and tele-dermatology. He is also the architect of the Dermatology Clinical Fellowship Programme for junior doctors and has played a pivotal role in establishing innovative nurse-led clinics across areas such as skin cancer, ultraviolet light therapy, patch testing, photodynamic therapy, and biological treatments. He is fully accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC) and holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians London (FRCP), Fellowship of the Royal College of physicians Edinburgh (FRCP), and the Fellowship Royal College of physicians and Surgeons Glasgow (FRCP). Academically, he holds a PhD in Dermatology from the University of Sheffield and a Diploma in Dermatology from Cardiff. He is an active member of several prestigious professional bodies, including the European Academy of Dermatology (EADV), the British Association of Dermatology (BAD), and is a Formal International Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). In the academic arena, Professor Al Abadie is currently Professor of Clinical Dermatology at University of Wolverhampton and previously held honorary appointment as Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, and Professor at the University of Central Lancashire Medical School (UCLAN). He has also held a visiting Professorship at Mount Sinai Medical School, New York, USA. He is a seasoned examiner for OSCEs, Specialty Boards, and MD degree assessments, and has served as Clinical Lead and Senior Academy Tutor for medical education. Internationally recognised for his contributions to dermatology, he is a regular speaker and chair at national and global conferences. His extensive body of peer-reviewed publications has earned critical acclaim, and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dermatology. Beyond the NHS, Professor Al Abadie brings decades of experience from the private sector, including his work at the renowned Nuffield Hospital and his prestigious practice on Harley Street, London. He is also the President and founder of The Midlands Medical Academy and the founder of the acclaimed Tettenhall skincare clinic, Wolverhampton.
