Overview

Physiotherapy is a fundamental part of your recovery following orthopaedic surgery. This guide provides detailed information about what to expect from your physiotherapy sessions, including timeframes and strategies for optimising your rehabilitation.

Step by Step

What you need to know.

01

Initial Phase — Immediately After Surgery

Physiotherapy begins shortly after surgery, typically during your hospital stay of one to three days. On day one, your physiotherapist will guide you through gentle range-of-motion exercises and assisted walking using supportive devices. Over the following days, walking frequency increases and standing exercises are introduced, targeting the muscles around your new joint.

02

Intermediate Phase — The First Six Weeks

During the first six weeks you will attend two to three sessions per week. These sessions focus on building strength and restoring movement through a structured programme.

  • Pain management through ice, heat, and electrical stimulation where appropriate
  • Range-of-motion exercises to restore joint flexibility
  • Strengthening exercises for the muscles supporting your joint
  • Gait training to develop proper movement mechanics
03

Maintain Consistency

Consistent attendance at sessions and adherence to your home exercise programme are the two most important factors in a successful recovery. Your physiotherapist will provide exercises to complete between sessions.

04

Manage Pain Appropriately

Some discomfort during physiotherapy is normal, but sharp or severe pain is not. Communicate openly with your physiotherapist about your pain levels so they can adjust your programme appropriately.

05

Set Realistic Goals

Recovery is a gradual process. Work with your physiotherapist to establish achievable milestones. Celebrate progress — even small improvements in range of motion or strength represent meaningful steps forward.
