About This Procedure

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that provides permanent contraception for men by cutting or blocking the vas deferens — the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. It is over 99% effective and is considered a permanent solution, though reversal procedures exist. At Optimised Care, vasectomy is performed using the no-scalpel technique — a minimally invasive approach that involves a tiny puncture rather than an incision, resulting in minimal bleeding, faster healing and lower risk of complications. The procedure takes approximately 15-20 minutes under local anaesthetic.

Common Question

Will it hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic so you will not feel pain during the vasectomy itself. Most men describe the injection of local anaesthetic as brief sharp discomfort. Afterwards, you may have mild aching or tenderness for a few days — similar to a dull bruise — which is well managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Step by Step

What happens on the day?

01

Preparation

Wear or bring supportive underwear or a scrotal support. No fasting required. The area is cleaned and local anaesthetic administered.

02

The procedure

Using the no-scalpel technique, a tiny puncture is made in the scrotum. The vas deferens on each side is identified, isolated and either cut, tied or blocked. The puncture does not require stitches and heals quickly. The whole procedure takes 15-20 minutes.

03

After the procedure

You rest briefly before going home — you will need someone to drive you. You will be given aftercare instructions and a follow-up semen test appointment to confirm the vasectomy has been successful.

Your Outcomes

Recovery after vasectomy

Recovery from vasectomy is quick. Most men return to desk-based work within 2-3 days and to physical activity within a week. Wearing supportive underwear and avoiding strenuous activity in the first few days helps minimise discomfort and swelling.

24 hours

Rest at home. Ice pack to reduce swelling. Supportive underwear.

2-3 days

Return to light work. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity.

1 week

Return to physical work and exercise. Intercourse can resume.

8-12 weeks

Semen analysis confirms vasectomy success. Continue contraception until confirmed clear.

Vasectomy is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.

We also offer vasectomy reversals

Changed your mind about a vasectomy? At Optimised Care we offer microsurgical vasectomy reversal — a precise procedure that reconnects the vas deferens under high magnification. Reversal is most successful when performed within ten years of the original vasectomy, but worthwhile attempts can be made later. Success rates for sperm returning to the ejaculate are typically 70-90% within the first decade, and pregnancy rates depend on a number of factors including the female partner's fertility. A consultation with our urology team will assess whether reversal is right for your circumstances and walk you through realistic outcomes before any decision is made.
