About This Procedure
What is a Nasal Polypectomy?
Nasal polyps are soft, painless growths that develop in the lining of the nose and sinuses. They are not cancer, but when they enlarge they can block your airway, dull your sense of smell, cause facial pressure, and lead to recurrent sinus infections. Polyps are often associated with chronic sinusitis, asthma, and sensitivity to aspirin. At Optimised Care, polypectomy is performed endoscopically — a thin camera passed through the nostril guides the surgeon as they carefully remove the polyps. There are no external incisions and no scars. The procedure is often performed alongside FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) when chronic sinusitis is also present. Most polypectomies take 30 to 60 minutes under general anaesthetic and are day-case procedures.
Common Question
Won't the polyps just grow back?
Polyps can recur, especially in patients with asthma or aspirin sensitivity. The single biggest predictor of long-term success is consistent use of a steroid nasal spray and saline rinses after surgery. Newer biologic medicines are also now available for patients with severe recurrent polyps — your consultant will discuss whether these are right for you.
Step by Step
What happens on the day?
01
Arrival and admission
You arrive at the hospital around two hours before surgery. You will meet your ENT consultant and anaesthetist and review the plan.
02
General anaesthetic
The procedure is done under general anaesthetic. You will be asleep throughout.
03
The procedure
Your surgeon passes a thin endoscope through your nostril and uses small instruments to remove the polyps. If you also have blocked sinuses, FESS may be done in the same operation. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
04
Recovery and discharge
You wake in recovery with a small dressing below your nose. Most patients go home the same day with simple painkillers, a saline rinse, and a steroid spray to begin once the lining has healed.

Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks
The first few days you may feel as though you have a heavy cold — blocked nose, some bloody discharge, and a reduced sense of smell. This improves quickly as the lining settles. Saline rinses several times a day are essential. Your consultant will start you on a steroid nasal spray once the lining has healed (usually after 2-4 weeks). Long-term use of the spray dramatically reduces the chance of polyps coming back. Most patients are back to office work within a week and to all normal activities within 2 weeks.
24-48 hours
Rest at home. Saline rinses 3-4 times daily.
1 week
Most patients back to work. Follow-up scope review.
2 weeks
Full normal activity, including exercise.
4 weeks
Steroid nasal spray usually started by this point.
3 months
Final follow-up. Long-term medical maintenance reviewed.
Nasal Polypectomy is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
