About This Procedure
What is a Orchidectomy?
Orchidectomy is the surgical removal of one or both testicles. A radical orchidectomy (removal through the groin) is the primary treatment for testicular cancer. A simple orchidectomy may be performed to treat chronic testicular pain that has not responded to other treatments, or for other clinical indications. Our consultant urologists provide sensitive, expert care for patients requiring orchidectomy. We understand that this procedure carries significant emotional weight and our team is committed to supporting you through every stage.
Common Question
I have been told I may have testicular cancer — what do I do first?
If you have been told there is a suspicion of testicular cancer, please contact us as soon as possible. We can arrange urgent assessment and if surgery is needed, we will move quickly. Testicular cancer has excellent outcomes when caught and treated early. You do not have to face this alone — our team will guide you clearly through every step.

Step by Step
What happens on the day?
01
Admission
You are admitted and meet your consultant and anaesthetist. If this is for suspected cancer, your pre-operative tests and imaging will have been reviewed. The procedure and aftercare are confirmed.
02
The procedure
For radical orchidectomy, an incision is made in the groin and the testicle and spermatic cord are removed intact. For simple orchidectomy, the approach may be scrotal. The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes under general anaesthetic. An artificial testicular prosthesis can be inserted at the same time if desired.
03
Recovery
Most patients are discharged the same day or the following morning. Pain relief, wound care instructions and a follow-up appointment are provided. If a cancer diagnosis is being investigated, the removed tissue is sent for histological analysis.

Recovery after orchidectomy
Recovery from orchidectomy is generally straightforward. Most patients are mobile within a day and return to light activities within 1-2 weeks. Supportive underwear, avoiding heavy lifting and adequate pain relief are important in the early recovery period.
Day 1-2
Rest. Supportive underwear. Wound care as instructed.
1-2 weeks
Return to light activities and desk work. Avoid strenuous exercise.
3-4 weeks
Return to physical activity. Wound fully healed.
4-6 weeks
Follow-up with consultant. Histology results discussed if applicable.

Orchidectomy is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
