About This Procedure

What is a Hernia Repair?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. The most common types are inguinal hernias (in the groin), umbilical hernias (at the navel) and incisional hernias (at the site of a previous surgical scar). Hernias cause a visible bulge and may cause pain or discomfort, particularly when lifting, coughing or straining. Hernia repair surgery pushes the protruding tissue back into place and strengthens the weakened area, usually using a synthetic mesh. At Optimised Care we favour the laparoscopic (keyhole) approach where appropriate — smaller incisions, less post-operative pain and a faster return to normal activities.

Common Question

My hernia is not causing much pain — do I really need surgery?

Not all hernias require immediate surgery. Small, asymptomatic hernias can sometimes be monitored. However, hernias do not resolve on their own and generally enlarge over time. There is also a risk of the hernia becoming strangulated — where the blood supply to the trapped tissue is cut off — which is a surgical emergency. Your consultant will assess your hernia and advise on the timing and urgency of repair.

What happens on the day?

01

Admission

You arrive having fasted. Your consultant confirms the surgical approach — laparoscopic or open — based on the type and complexity of your hernia.

02

The procedure

For laparoscopic repair, 2-3 small incisions are made and the hernia is repaired using a mesh introduced through the keyhole approach. For open repair, a single incision is made directly over the hernia. The procedure takes 30-60 minutes under general anaesthetic.

03

Recovery and discharge

Most patients are discharged the same day. You will need someone to drive you home. Wound care instructions, pain relief and a follow-up appointment are provided.

Your Outcomes

Recovery after hernia repair

Recovery from laparoscopic hernia repair is typically faster than open repair. Most patients return to light activities within 1-2 weeks and to normal activity within 3-4 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks to allow the mesh to properly integrate.

Day 1-2

Rest at home. Mild discomfort managed with pain relief.

1-2 weeks

Return to light desk work. Short walks encouraged.

3-4 weeks

Return to most normal activities. Avoid heavy lifting.

4-6 weeks

Return to strenuous activity and exercise. Follow-up with surgeon.

Hernia Repair is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
