Overview

If you are considering surgery, it is natural to have questions about what to expect. This guide walks you through each stage of preparation so you feel fully informed and confident on the day of your procedure. Your Patient Coordinator is available throughout to offer one-on-one guidance and answer any questions.

How to Prepare

Before your procedure.

01

Surgeon Consultation

Use your consultation to understand the procedure fully. Ask about risks, recovery time, expected outcomes, and anything else that matters to you. Your consultant will provide tailored preparation guidance.

02

Manage Your Medications

Inform your surgeon about all medications you take — prescriptions, over-the-counter remedies, and supplements. You may need to pause certain medications before surgery.

03

Coordinate Help at Home

Depending on your procedure, arranging help from a friend, family member, or carer during early recovery supports your comfort, safety, and healing.

04

Plan Your Leave

Take sufficient time off work for proper recovery. Recovery periods vary by procedure — your consultant will advise what to expect.

05

Prepare for Fasting

If anaesthesia is required, fasting beforehand is necessary. You will receive clear instructions on when to stop eating and drinking. Follow these carefully to minimise any complications.

06

Quit Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications and slows healing. Your care team will advise when to stop before and after your procedure.

07

Arrange Transport Home

As you will be under anaesthesia, it is not safe to drive after surgery. Arrange for a friend, family member, or hospital transport to take you home.

08

Pre-Surgery Guidance

You will receive detailed instructions covering dietary advice, medication adjustments, and exercise guidelines. Following these is essential for your safety and the best possible outcome.
