About This Procedure

What is a Orchiopexy?

Orchiopexy is a surgical procedure to bring an undescended testicle down into the scrotum and fix it in position. It is most commonly performed in childhood, but may also be required in adults whose undescended testicle was not treated in childhood. The procedure may also be used to fix a testicle that has undergone torsion (twisting) — an emergency situation requiring prompt surgery. In adult cases, orchiopexy reduces the risk of testicular torsion recurring and may help preserve fertility.

Common Question

Does an undescended testicle need treating in adults?

Yes, in most cases. An undescended testicle in an adult carries an increased risk of testicular cancer compared to a normally positioned testicle. Surgery to bring it into the scrotum makes it easier to monitor, may improve function, and reduces — though does not eliminate — the cancer risk. Your consultant will explain the specific implications for your situation.

Step by Step

What happens on the day?

01

Admission

You arrive having fasted. Your consultant reviews the imaging and confirms the surgical plan.

02

The procedure

Under general anaesthetic, incisions are made in the groin and scrotum. The testicle is carefully mobilised from its undescended position and brought down through the inguinal canal into the scrotum, where it is fixed in place. Dissolvable sutures are used. The procedure takes 45-60 minutes.

03

Recovery and discharge

Most patients are discharged the same day. Supportive underwear, wound care instructions and pain relief are provided along with a follow-up appointment.

1-2 weeks

Return to light activities and desk work.

2-3 weeks

Orchiopexy is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
