About This Procedure
What is a Pelvic Floor Repair?
Pelvic floor repair surgery addresses pelvic organ prolapse — a condition where the bladder, bowel or uterus descend from their normal position and press into the vagina. Prolapse is common, particularly after childbirth and during the menopause, and can cause significant discomfort and impact quality of life. Surgery involves repairing and strengthening the weakened tissues of the pelvic floor to restore normal anatomy and relieve symptoms. The specific procedure depends on which organs are affected and the degree of prolapse.
Common Question
I have been putting this off — is that normal?
Many women live with prolapse symptoms for years before seeking help, often because they feel embarrassed or are unsure whether surgery is the right answer. Our consultants are experienced in discussing all options — including non-surgical management with physiotherapy and pessaries — without pressure. We will help you understand what is most appropriate for your situation.
Step by Step
What happens on the day?
01
Admission
You are admitted to The Bromsgrove Hospital and meet your consultant and anaesthetist. The surgical plan is confirmed.
02
The procedure
Performed under general anaesthetic, the surgery involves repairing the weakened vaginal walls and surrounding tissues. The specific technique depends on the type and extent of prolapse — anterior repair, posterior repair, or both. A uterine prolapse may require additional procedures. Operating time is 1-2 hours.
03
Recovery
Most patients stay in hospital for 1-2 nights. A catheter is used during surgery and for a short period after. You will be given a clear recovery plan before discharge.

Recovery after pelvic floor repair
Recovery from pelvic floor repair requires patience. The repaired tissues need time to heal and strengthen properly. Lifting, straining and vigorous activity must be avoided for 6-8 weeks. Physiotherapy is an important part of your long-term recovery to maintain and strengthen the repair.
1-3 days
Hospital stay. Catheter removal. Begin light walking.
2-4 weeks
Home recovery. Rest. Light activities only. Avoid lifting.
6-8 weeks
Return to most normal activities. Driving and light exercise resume.
3-6 months
Full recovery. Pelvic floor physiotherapy ongoing. Final review.
Pelvic Floor Repair is a well-established procedure with a high success rate. As with all surgery, risks exist including infection, blood clots, and complications. Your consultant will discuss your individual risk profile before you proceed.
