About This Procedure
What is a Vulval Biopsies?
A vulval biopsy is a minor procedure in which a small sample of skin is taken from the vulva and sent to a laboratory for analysis. It is used to investigate skin changes, lesions, persistent itching, pain or discolouration that cannot be diagnosed by examination alone. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient. It is quick, well tolerated and provides your consultant with the information needed to confirm a diagnosis and plan appropriate treatment.
Common Question
I am worried about what the biopsy might find — should I be concerned?
It is completely understandable to feel anxious. Vulval biopsies are performed to get answers, not because a serious diagnosis is already suspected. Many conditions that require biopsy for diagnosis are benign and very treatable. Getting a prompt diagnosis means any treatment needed can be started quickly. Uncertainty is often more distressing than knowing the answer.
Step by Step
What happens on the day?
01
Preparation
No fasting required. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. You will be asked to undress from the waist down in a private examination room.
02
The procedure
Local anaesthetic is injected into the biopsy site. Once numb, a small punch or excision biopsy is taken — this takes only a few minutes. One or two small dissolvable sutures may be placed. Most patients experience only mild discomfort during and after the procedure.
03
After the procedure
You rest briefly before going home the same day. Most patients drive themselves home. The biopsy sample is sent to the laboratory and results are typically available within 2-4 weeks. Your consultant will contact you to discuss the findings.
